Vintage Aubusson Style Rug

The design is rooted in the French Aubusson tradition, which goes back centuries to the weaving workshops of Aubusson and nearby Felletin in central France. The region’s tapestry history is documented from at least the 15th century, and Aubusson became especially celebrated for its sophisticated floral and decorative designs. 

By the 18th and 19th centuries, Aubusson floor coverings became known for exactly the vocabulary you’re seeing here: soft pastel grounds, floral bouquets, scrolling borders and painterly ornamentation.
